Leaf shapes and edges, explained
Shape — Simple leaves are a single, undivided blade (like willow or beech). Lobed leaves have rounded or pointed sections jutting out from a central point or vein (like oak or maple). Compound leaves are made of several smaller leaflets attached to one stem, so the whole leaf looks like a cluster (like ash).
Edge — Entire edges are smooth all the way round. Toothed (or serrated) edges have small, saw-like points, common on birch and beech. Spiny edges have sharp, defensive points, as on holly.
Seasonal variation
The same tree can look different across the year. In spring, new leaves often emerge paler and softer. Through summer they deepen to full green as chlorophyll production peaks. In autumn, chlorophyll breaks down and hidden pigments show through — yellows and oranges from carotenoids, reds from anthocyanins — before deciduous leaves fall. Encourage kids to revisit the same tree across a term and compare what changes and what stays the same (the shape and edge type never change, even as the colour does).
