In this habitats and ecosystems lesson, students head outdoors to explore the soil and search for garden worms. Using a worm identification poster and fact sheet, they’ll learn how to recognise the three main types of garden worm—surface-dwelling (Epigeic), topsoil (Endogeic), and deep-burrowing (Anecic).
As students discover worms around the outdoor space, they’ll record their observations in a results table and use key features to work out which type they have found. This activity encourages close observation, species classification, accurate data recording, and curiosity about the natural world.
