This activity takes students on a walk around your outdoor space, encouraging them to step into the shoes of a chosen animal. They’ll consider what that animal might see, hear, and feel. This exercise serves as an excellent introduction to diary writing and can be used either as a standalone activity or as a lead-up to a more extensive writing project. It also ties in well with your habitats topic.
Teaching Structure:
- Explain to the students that they will go outside and choose an animal to observe. It could be anything from a tiny insect to a large bird.
- Instruct them to imagine they are their chosen animal and think about what it might see, hear, and feel. It might be helpful to go through an example together with the whole class.
- Have them work on the differentiated activity sheets.
- After 15-20 minutes, gather the students to share their observations and experiences with one another.
