Take learning outside (and after dark!) with this hands-on DIY Moth Trap investigation — a complete science activity that gets pupils building, observing, and recording real nocturnal wildlife.

Pupils follow simple visual instructions to construct a moth trap from a bucket, funnel, and light source, then leave it overnight to discover what flies in. The next morning, they carefully observe, identify, draw, and tally the moths they find — supporting key science skills in observation, data handling, and respect for living things.

Differentiated recording sheets make it easy to use across mixed-age groups: younger pupils focus on careful drawing and description, while older pupils identify species and record findings using tally marks.

What's included:

  • Teacher's guide with learning objectives, build instructions, and plenary prompts
  • Visual step-by-step build instructions sheet (pupil-facing)
  • Differentiated observation and tally recording sheet
  • Equipment checklist and trap measurement guide
