Looking for a hands-on outdoor science activity to explore animal habitats? This engaging habitat investigation is a great way for students to discover which animals are active in your school grounds, garden, or local woodland. Perfect for science lessons focused on habitats, tracking animals, and developing observation skills, this activity is easily adaptable for all age groups.

In this practical science investigation, students will mark out a small area using sand or fine soil to create a simple animal track trap. After leaving it overnight, they’ll return to examine and identify any footprints or signs of wildlife activity. It's an ideal way to bring habitat studies to life while introducing scientific thinking and inquiry outdoors.

Use it as a one-off science experiment or extend it into a longer investigation by changing variables such as location, weather conditions, season, or adding food to attract different animals.

We think you'll also love our Nature Hoops biodiversity / habitats investigation.
