This activity encourages students to explore the wildlife in your pond by creating their own underwater viewers using a plastic bottle, tape, and scissors. It’s an excellent activity for studying living things, habitats, or simply giving students an opportunity to explore this fascinating world.
Teaching Structure:
- Have the students create their underwater viewers, offering assistance to younger students as needed.
- Allow time for them to use the viewers to explore the pond's wildlife. During or after their exploration, they can complete the differentiated sheets to record their observations.
- For higher grade levels, encourage students to use books and the internet to identify what they see. Please note: This activity involves inherent risks, so appropriate safety measures must be in place.
- We recommend having all students lie down on an area close to the water level before using the viewers. Check out our risk assessment creator to quickly and easily produce a risk assessment.
