Onomatopoeia Poetry Activity
You need to be a member to download this file.

This engaging poetry activity immerses students in the sounds of nature while exploring onomatopoeia. They’ll listen, create their own sounds, and craft original onomatopoeia poems.

Start by explaining what an onomatopoeia is, sharing examples of onomatopoeia poetry. Have students highlight the onomatopoeias in the example poem, then, as a filler activity, they can illustrate the poem.

Next, take the class outside to listen for natural sounds, encouraging them to create their own (such as hitting rocks together or crunching leaves). While outdoors, students will complete the 'Sound Hunt' sheet and create onomatopoeia-inspired art.

With their list of onomatopoeias, students can write their own poems, using the example for guidance. This activity works well both individually or in pairs.
