In this active outdoor math lesson, pupils explore measurement by drawing and analyzing large-scale rectangles and squares on the playground using chalk. They work in pairs to construct their shapes, use measuring tapes or trundle wheels to find the side lengths, and record their data on their sheets. From there, they calculate both the area and perimeter of each shape, making practical decisions about which units (meters, feet, or decimeters) are most efficient to keep large-scale calculations manageable.

Taking this concept off the whiteboard and onto the concrete helps children physically distinguish between the distance around a shape and the space inside it. The hands-on nature of the task supports both the UK National Curriculum and US Common Core state standards for measurement, ensuring solid conceptual understanding through real-world scale. You can run this outdoor area and perimeter activity for ages 7–9 with minimal prep—just grab some chalk, clipboards, and measuring tapes, and take your math block outside.
