This is an excellent team activity to get children thinking carefully about reducing, reusing, and recycling. They will sort statement cards into the correct category in a fun relay game.
Teaching Structure:
- Begin with a discussion on the '3Rs' and their importance.
- Explain that students will form teams of 4 or 5 and sort statements into the appropriate categories (reusing, reducing, and recycling).
- Set up three labeled zones or tubs for each of the '3Rs'.
- Have the children line up in their teams a good distance away from the zones or tubs.
- The first child from each team will collect a statement card from the teacher, return to their team, and discuss which of the 3Rs the statement fits into. The child then runs to place the card in the correct zone/tub, runs back, and joins the back of their team's line.
- The next child then runs to collect a new card.
- Continue the activity for an agreed amount of time or until all the statement cards have been used.
- Review the statement cards to see if they were sorted correctly.
- For added competition, have each team mark their cards with a colored sticker or write their name on them, then count how many each team got correct.
For younger students, you may need to read the cards aloud for them.
