Habitats Investigation - The Pitfall Insect Trap - Living Things

The insect trap investigation encourages students to closely examine the fascinating creepy crawlies found in your outdoor space by creating small traps. This activity is ideal for lessons on living things, habitats, data handling, and developing key investigation skills.

Ages 4-6: Students will set the traps and observe what they collect. At this age, it's beneficial for them to explore the wildlife by discussing the insects' appearance, movement, key features, and other general observations. After studying what they've trapped, they can complete the observation sheet by drawing what they’ve collected.

Ages 7-9 & 10-12: Students will set the traps and monitor them daily to see what crawls inside. They will identify the creatures and record their results in a results table. They can then use their data to create a bar graph of their findings, either by accumulating all results or using individual data. Afterward, they will complete the evaluation question sheets, which encourage them to reflect on the success of their traps and the reasons behind their results.
