Turn sticks, string, and a splash of creativity into beautiful wooden wind chimes. This outdoor Art & Design lesson for KS2 (ages 8–9) develops independence, fine-motor skills, and an understanding of materials and their properties while introducing the cultural history of wind chimes.

What pupils do

  • Go on a mini nature hunt to choose an “interesting” stick (shape, texture, colour).

  • Select and prepare 5–6 smaller sticks, assemble their chime with string, and (optionally) paint in rainbow colours.

  • Reflect on design choices and what they learned about working with natural materials.

This Wooden Wind Chimes lesson is part of the Educate Outside Outdoor Learning Scheme of Work, a complete year-round programme of weekly outdoor lessons designed to build creativity, confidence, and connection with nature.

This lesson is taken from our  Outdoor Learning Scheme of Work — a complete year of weekly outdoor lessons for ages 4–11. Each age group includes 30 ready-to-use sessions plus 8 bonus activities, designed to save planning time while giving children meaningful outdoor experiences every week.
