The sound map is an excellent activity to get students actively listening to the sounds around them as they explore this fascinating topic. It also provides strong connections to measuring, compass work, and estimation.

Students will choose a spot in your outdoor area to sit and then mark the sounds they hear in relation to their position (with themselves in the center of the sheet) by drawing or writing on the activity sheet.

Encourage students to carefully consider how far away the sounds are and to mark them accordingly on the sheet. You can also incorporate bearings by having students estimate distances on their maps. Providing each student with a compass allows them to mark the bearings of each sound as well.
