Measurement & Averages Investigation - A River's The Rate Of Flow
You need to be a member to download this file.

This is a fantastic activity if you’re focusing on measuring, averages, or calculations. Students will measure the flow rate of a river using sticks, a measured distance, a stopwatch, and a calculator (depending on the level of challenge you want to provide).

Before starting, have the students estimate the flow rate and record it on their sheets. Measure out a distance of 10 meters along the river and mark the start and end points with something visible (a bag, cones, etc.). Students will drop a stick into the water at the start of the 10 meters and time how long it takes for the stick to reach the end of the marked section, recording their results in the table. They should repeat this four times to obtain a set of results.

Once they have their data, students will calculate the averages before determining the flow rate, either by following provided formulas or figuring it out themselves. This pack includes two levels of differentiation.
