Symmetry is a really fun and easy topic to take outside with
minimal preparation whether you are on a beach, in your playground, or in the
woods. Below are just two ideas that we love using to teach symmetry outdoors.
Symmetry Hunt – Find objects with 1, 2, 3, or 4 lines of
symmetry. You can then get them to record their findings on a sheet, take a
photo of it, or simply just let them enjoy finding symmetry – not everything
has to be evidenced and assessed!

Symmetry Bugs – Get your class to design and build their own
symmetrical bugs using sticks and other natural materials. This activity is
great fun for all age groups and gives students a chance to be creative and use
their imaginations. You will be amazed at what some of your class will come up
with! Sticks are a fantastic resource to have for all areas of the curriculum,
however if you don’t have any this activity also works using chalk on the
playground, or by drawing in the sand.
