When thinking about teaching addition outside, all you need to do is come up with a way for students to generate numbers that they can add together. We LOVE Addition Olympics where students take part in physical activities to generate their set of numbers.

In pairs, students will complete timed activities (long jump, sprinting, etc.) where they add their results together using column addition to get a combined score. Depending on the ability level, you can get students to record their results to a different level of accuracy to allow for differentiation. Physical activity, the outdoors, and addition – what’s not to love!
