Poetry tends to be a subject which is a bit like Marmite, you
either love it or hate it. However, whichever side of the fence you fall,
taking your poetry lessons outdoors can have a great impact on your teaching
and the students learning.
Poetry is all about feelings, emotion, and imagery so taking
this topic into different environments can help to enhance all of these things
for the listener or writer. For example, reading a spooky poem in the classroom
will have a completely different impact compared to if you are reading it at
dusk around a campfire. The same can be said for writing, by putting students
into meaningful environments that are going to enhance their senses, emotions,
and imagination can greatly benefit their poetry writing.
One way we love to teach poetry outdoors is by giving each
student their own scrapbook to complete with each page focusing on a different
type of poetry. They can wonder around your outdoor space, getting inspiration
from the amazing world around them. This activity can be great to do in a
variety of weather, as this can completely change the mood of a poem.
