These outdoor lessons encourage children to calculate the perimeter, radius, and diameter of puddles, proving that rain is no reason to stop outdoor learning. This pack contains cross-curricular resources and activities designed for rainy days. So put on those waterproofs and embrace the weather!

This resource includes science, literacy, and math activities for ages 7-10.

Activities Included:

  • Rain Description: Children will go outside and use adjectives, similes, and metaphors to describe what they see, hear, feel, and touch.
  • Rain Poetry: Using their descriptions, children will write a poem about the rain. Ideally, they can draft their poems outside on a whiteboard or scrap paper before writing them up neatly indoors.
  • Rain Gauge Investigation: In this investigation, children will design and build their own rain gauge to record rainfall over a set period. They will work in teams to experiment with their designs, collect data, and create line graphs to analyze their results.
  • Puddle Size: This activity focuses on measuring puddles using their diameters, radius, and perimeter. Children will find five puddles, measure them, record their results on a line graph, and answer related questions.
  • Vibrant Rain: In this creative activity, children will find different colored natural items, crush them with stones, and use the colors to create rain art. It's best to print this activity sheet on card stock to prevent it from becoming too soggy when using the damp natural materials.
