Earth Day is a great opportunity to get out into the community (or your playground!) and have a clean up. This activity encourages students to consider where the trash has come from and whether there are more sustainable options.

Why not use Earth Day as an opportunity to consider how we get around and the impact this can have on the environment. Put on some high vis jackets and investigate the traffic in your local area with this data handling activity where your students will count and record the amount and types of traffic passing a chosen area. They will record their results in a visual tally chart. This is a great investigation to aid discussion on global warming and local issues. For the older children you can go onto looking at ratio based on the results collected.

They’ll think about what that animal might be able to see, hear and feel. It’s a great introduction to diary writing that can be used as a stand alone activity or the lead up to a big write. It also links in nicely with your habitats topic.

Weeds are our friends and it’s time to save them! In thiss outdoor Earth Day lesson your class will adopt a weed and spend some time studying it carefully and thinking about all the good things about their weed.
They will then write a letter to the caretaker or gardener persuading them to spare their weed from being poisoned or removed. This activity is great if you’re looking at persuasive writing, however it also has good links to plants and habitats as your class will research the benefits that their chosen plant has on local wildlife.
